Our history

The first service of what is now Discovery Church was held on December 25, 1855. As the first church in St. Cloud the church has a long and productive history of ministry. Many faithful, godly men pastored the church during its first 100 years of ministry. The church met at various locations until selecting a site near the downtown area in the 1870s. Prior to the present site the church worshipped in what is now the Model College of Hair Design.

In the late 1950s the land at the present location was miraculously provided for $1.00 and plans were made to build a new facility that was dedicated on Mother's Day of 1965. During the 1970s a building program doubled the size of the education wing to its current size and configuration. In 1997 the exterior of the building, the church lobby, and the parking lot and the landscaping were all renovated. As ministry expanded more facility improvements were made in 2001 to enable the church to minister more effectively.

As the church approaches 150 years of ministry one word sums up the story of Discovery Church –faithfulness. The faithfulness of God has been demonstrated on numerous occasions when nothing short of a miracle was provided. The faithfulness of many incredible people established a heritage from which the current church family benefits. Through many difficult periods of our nation's history, including wars and depressions, God's people made the sacrifices that were necessary for God's light to keep shining. The pastoral leadership at First Baptist has been stable with the four previous pastors having an average tenure of seven years.

As Discovery Church develops the Purpose Driven Church philosophy of ministry, the rich tradition of our history provides the assurance of God's continuing faithfulness for a future that is bright as we continue the tradition of faithfulness.
